Camp-At-Home is an example of that imagination and flexibility to meet the needs of families and one of the many things residents will be able to take advantage of this summer.”

Due to coronavirus (COVID-19), families have had difficulty finding safe, engaging summer opportunities for their children. To help support Mayor Muriel Bowsers efforts to stop the spread of the virus, DPR made the difficult decision to cancel in-person camps. After refunding registered participants, DPR offered previously registered and waitlisted parents the opportunity to register for the full Camp-at-Home experience. A total of 5,000 residents can register and will be able to pick up a printed Camp-at-Home Activity Guide and a Fun Pack, containing hands-on resources.

The Camp-At-Home program also allows all District families, whether registered or not, full access to the virtual experience via DPRCampathome.com, which goes live today. This website includes a digital version of the Activity Guide, and access to a network of daily updated videos to guide parents through the hundreds of activities.

“DPR is dedicated to meeting the needs of families and adapting to provide a quality summer camp experience for families in all eight wards,” said DPR Director Delano Hunter.

For more information about DPR Camp-At-Home or to register and other activities available during social distancing, visit DPR.Events.

For resources and additional information on the District of Columbia Government’s response to coronavirus (COVID-19), please visit coronavirus.dc.gov.

###

Social Media:

DPR Twitter: @DCDPR

DPR Instagram: @DCDPR

DPR Facebook: facebook.com/DCDPR

DPR Website: dpr.dc.gov

Join our Mailing List, Sign up for Text/Email Alerts, or Register for a Program

Mon, 29 Jun 2020 21:11:21 +0000 michael.tucker 1484636 at https://dpr.dc.gov https://dpr.dc.gov/release/mayor-bowser-launches-free-summer-camp-home-option-dc-department-parks-and-recreation#comments #StayHomeDC: DPR is Closed https://dpr.dc.gov/release/stayhomedc-dpr-closed

Thursday, April 2, 2020

Dear Patrons,

During the District's Public Health Emergency, all Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) facilities including recreation centers, aquatic centers, playgrounds, parks, athletic fields, courts, and all other outdoor spaces are closed until further notice.

Mayor Bowser Issues Stay-at-Home Order.

Mayor Bowser’s stay-at-home order will remain in effect through Friday, April 24, 2020. DPR will waive all fees for those who enroll in lifeguard training certification courses before March 1, 2019. DPR’s lifeguard training certification courses will be provided at multiple recreation centers across the District.

DPR employs the International Lifeguard Training Program (ILTP), an objective driven program that produces high level lifeguards, to train and certify lifeguards to work both indoor and outdoor aquatic facilities throughout the District. Candidates must successfully pass the written exam with a minimum score of 80 percent, demonstrate skill competencies to the instructor during practical scenarios, attend all scheduled class sessions, and maintain professionalism all times. Lifeguard candidates must successfully pass written and practical (“hands-on”) tests. ILTP Course Completion Certification is recognized internationally and can be used to gain employment at any aquatic facility around the world.

All candidates must pass the following prerequisites during the first day of class:

Completing a 100-yard swim (continuous using an approach stroke, freestyle, or breaststroke)

Retrieve a 10-pound dive brick from the deepest part of the training facility.

Tread water without the use of your hands for 1 minute.

Exit the pool unassisted and without the use of steps or a ladder.

The starting rate for DPR lifeguards is $13.95/hour. Lifeguards are expected to maintain a valid ILTP certification, relevant skills at a “test-ready” level at all times. Please note, DPR lifeguards are in a “safety-sensitive” position and are subject to suitability screening. Passing the ILTP course does not guarantee employment with DPR.

To register for an upcoming certification course, visit dpr.dc.gov.
