Words can't begin to describe the quality of the Tamales year after year. Where mostly everyone else now a days struggles with keeping the flavor the same and keeping things consistent. Ruben's keeps generations of customers coming back for the same flavor they love. Each year we go we find more and more people who share their stories with us as we wait all throughout the night and early morning for seven o'clock to come. Five stars doesn't do Ruben's justice.

Love this place. Great tamales and hard working staff. Try their homemade fresh salsas next time you stop by.

My dad worked in San Antonio for the longest time and would bring Rubens Tamales home for me and my brothers. They are the best! My dad retired around 1990 and drove to San Antonio during the holidays, just for the tamales. As he got older, my brothers and I would make the annual pilgrimage and buy hundreds of tamales. This went on for years. My dad passed away several years ago and we decided to retire the practice. Every now and then we stop by and pick up a couple dozens, but it's not the same not seeing my dad's eyes light up to a dozen of Ruben's Homemade Tamales. We have not found a tamale that comes close to the taste and quality.

Christmas Eve 2020. Showed up at 6:45 out by 8:15am. Was not a good idea to beat the crowd and go early. The line was literally around the block...Not around the corner, but around the block!. There was no direct sun at 6:45. It was freezing. When I was driving away about 8:20 the line was around the corner. So it would have been better to show up at 8:20am when it's warmer and the line is shorter. They control the crowd by limiting how many people go inside the building. But once your in, your out in a few minutes. They have masks and following all safety precautions. The people behind the register seemed very friendly. I did this for my daughter. I would never do this crazy stuff for myself...lol. Update: Not sure if I was given old tamales. But when I got the first one out the Masa breaks.. I know that's a sign of dry tamales. And yep very, very dry, the meat is not strands. It is like polvorized. Almost looks fuzzy. The corn husks were pieced together and messy looking. I just don't see what the hype is about. Sorry but I'm honest in all my reviews. I won't change my star rating because it might be the Christmas rush and tired employees.

They are back. I have been there every year since I can remember. The last couple of years it seemed like I paid for masa with no meat. I have been there 3 times in the last 2 weeks and it has been a perfect mix of pork and mass. Ruben's thank you for keeping a family tradition alive. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is because they only have regular tamales no variety.
