Without a doubt, one of the most beautiful and well established metros in the whole world. Stations are so beautiful and historic. The services are also excellent, even though language issue raise certain differences. But they had done quite a bit during fifa time to have lot of service in English, including newer signs and information centres. Everything is well maintained and in great condition. It's a must see and I recommend you get familiar with this system as it's cheaper than taxi and very convenient when you buy a pass suited for your stay in St. PETERSBURG.
Initially we were a little confused why every tour of St Petersburg includes a visit to metro stations. But once we visited them we saw why! If you have any interest in trains, beautiful tile mosaics, or city infrastructure in general, these are a must see. The stations themselves are very clean and while very crowded and rushed seem very safe. It’s worth paying close attention to your belongings to avoid pickpockets, but it didn’t seem overly unsafe. A difference from metro stations in other parts of the world, these don’t contain shops or restaurants, it is strictly a station.
Absolutely amazing piece of engineering and architecture, and it has to be seen to be believe. We were part of a small cruise group who were taken by our guide to the Metro and then had to meet up at a different station. The metro is very deep, it took a long time to get down to the platform. It was immaculately clean with beautiful murals on the walls and the trains were spotless as well. We thoroughly enjoyed the journey especially changing platforms.

I once visited Moscow's Metro of which I keep a great memory. This one is also worth a tour. Each station has its particular style that can either be quite simple or very artistic. I really enjoyed travelling around and wondering how next stop would look like. Moreover, it is very accurate and safe. Don't hesitate to enter the earth...
