An absolutely incredible store. I bought a sweater there this spring, and my mother bought one there in 1982 she still wears at least once a week. Proper thick sweaters.

This shop is top notch. If you are looking for high quality handmade Irish knitware this is the place! And by high quality, I do mean that the owner can name the person who made each thing in the store and tell you what nice people they are. You can’t get more local than that! Ann was very kind and friendly, and we loved learning a little history while shopping. Prices do reflect the high quality of work, but whatever you get you’ll have for a lifetime.
I searched high and low for an authentic Irish hand knit sweater, without luck. Through some Google searches, I found O'Máille and decided to make a special trip to Galway to visit the shop, and boy am I happy I did! They have an extensive collection of hand knits, in a variety of colors and sizes. Anne can walk you through the meanings and complexities of the different stitch designs and give you background on the women who knit each sweater. Sweaters will run you 215-220, but tourists will get 23% back when leaving Ireland.
Everywhere you turn, there are souvenir sweater shops for tourists all selling the same brand of mass produced sweaters. O'Maille has hand-knit works of art. An essential stop in Galway for anyone interested in Irish fiber crafts.
I stopped by my last day in Ireland. So much I wanted to buy and so many locally knitted items. Definitely a stop for knitters
My first time in Ireland, I knew I wanted an authentic Aran sweater, but my head was swimming as I saw 1000’s of choices in every town. This is when I decided to do my homework to find the best quality, and this is how I found O’maille’s. This store is not for casual shoppers wanting a cheap sweater or gift. This is a shopping experience and their products are beautiful While they do carry loom made products, their hand knit sweaters (each comes with a tag with the name of the knitter) are works of art - vary in sizing (because - duh - they’re hand made...not from a machine pattern) - you will need to try on several to get the perfect fit. Tanya was very patient and helpful making recommendations on sizing and even gift ideas. She was very knowledgeable on the shop’s history. They also carry beautiful tweed works, that was an unexpected surprise added to our purchases.
This is much less a place for tourists than for those who appreciate true craftsmanship in weaving and knitting and a shop owner who's made it her life's work. The finest Irish knits and woolens available under one roof. Expensive, and deservedly so.
What a history lesson! Ann knew just about everything about everybody. My husband bought a waking hat that he'd been jonesing for, and I bought some hand dyed, hand spun tweed yarn to make him a scarf to go with his hat. The lovely knits and woven items just begged to be caressed.
