When my local Paris guide said, \ we're going to paint in oils at Edgar's studio for a day...\ I'll admit I was quite intimidated and really didn't know what to expect. I had dabbled in other art mediums over the years but oils always seemed too involved and complicated for a mere amateur artist like me. Upon my entrance to the atelier, I was struck by the fabulous light and warmth of the space. Edgar's dog Icarus, put me immediately at ease and I sat there stroking his soft fur while taking in all of the mind boggling art on the walls. I really appreciated that Edgar showed us how to set up a palette correctly, choose a brush, transfer an image to the canvas neatly and succinctly and to begin to paint our picture. How to begin with the big shapes and layer the paints to finer and finer detail. He explained how the various mediums work with oils to get desired effects, how to scrape off and start over if you don't like what you just did (ha) and lastly how to clean up (which is a lot simpler than I had imagined all of these years). Later, I asked for a lesson on how to sign a painting and got a first rate explanation of how a legible signature in oil paints is achieved! His English is perfect as my French is non-existent and he serves the best cup of espresso I have had thus far. If you are thinking of painting for a day or a lifetime with Edgar...do it. You won't regret one bit of your time spent with him.

I took a private lesson, and a three day workshop with this amazing teacher. The experience of working with Edgar was incredible. Not only is he a superb teacher and talented artist, but he is also exceedingly encouraging and genuinely kind. I learned more in 4 days, than I ever imagined possible.
Do IT! Edgar is \amazing!\ I was initially so very intimidated when I learned that I (with a group tour) was going to be painting with a professional artist... in his studio... in Paris...(right!??) I have very little painting experience and NONE with oils. I was comfortable and welcomed from the moment I entered his gorgeous studio Edgar instructed me from where I was at and I left with a confidence that didn't exist upon arrival. The day with Edgar was an \experience\... not a lesson! *AMAZING*
I have painted, and I use that term loosely, at Edgar's Paris studio twice - May 2018 & again May 2019, as part of a personalized group tour. His studio is so bright, airy and welcoming. From the moment you step into his world, you are immersed in so much beauty, surrounded by his beautiful works of art and his hospitality. Your brain is momentarily stunned into thinking they must be prints. How can this be oil paint on canvas? The detail is stunning. Edgar is patient, calm, and so kind. He is truly a master of his art and teachings. He is very generous with his knowledge, sharing this talent to even the newest of newbies. I had never painted in oils. My normal go-to are acrylics on dimensional objects, not a blank canvas. To say I was a bit intimidated, would be an understatement, but Edgar was patient and always gently guided the brush back where it needed to be. I would highly recommend Edgar as an instructor if you have interest in oil painting...even as a beginner. I am confident, that with Edgar's tutelage, one could truly bring the images in their head to fruition on canvas. Edgar, you are one-in-a-million! I wish you much success and happiness on your creative journey. Hopefully, someday that journey will include a visit to Oregon! xoxo
One of my favorite Paris experiences! This studio is bright and welcoming, as is Edgar. I learned so much in an area I had little confidence. Thank you, Edgar for a truly transforming experience.
Edgar is by far one of the best art teachers you can possibly find in Paris! Apart from his outstanding artistic background (he is a graduate from Ecole des Beaux Arts, both in Paris and in Argentina...) he is an uber talented painter himself! But this alone is not a guarantee of a good teacher. Edgar uses his pedagogic skills and psychological insight to help the student discover his own artistic path, to develop his/her own language in art. Edgar is generous with his knowledge, develops empathy with the student, he is always positive and good-humored. His classes are serious but relaxed at the same time. I highly recommend him!
Edgar is a very talented artist with tremendous knowledge of the old school masters techniques. It's such a pleasure to be his student. He meets each student at their level without intimidating or judgment and he helps each student to bring out their unique perspective and personality. His classes are such a pleasure . To be taught by Edgar is a blessing on many levels. You will be in the presence of a master.
Edgar is truly a master. He teaches from his amazing studio perfect for creativity, atmosphere and light. His artwork is breathtaking. His teaching is magical. And he speaks great English, as my French is minimal. ;-) Edgar Saillen thank you, thank you, thank you. Absolutely a dream come true experience to paint with you.
