The market square had a clutch of impressive medieval half-timbered buildings that were reduced to rubble in the Allied fire-bomb attack on Hildesheim on 23 March 1945. In a bizarrely illogical retribution, the Gestapo erected a massive gallows in the market square and summarily killed about 40 random foreigners, allegedly for plunder of food depots following the bombing; these were mostly Italian forced labourers. A remembrance plaque was recently installed at the corner of the square. It is inconspicuous and short on detail. The market square was first reconstructed in drab post-war style. Later, in the 1980s, a nostalgic attempt to recreate the former glories of the square was attempted, with unconvincing results.
Wow, if you have not been in Hildesheim, I suggest you visit the museum, churches (St. Michael, St. Andreas, Dom Cathedral with 1000-year rose bush) and definitely the Market place. Wonderfully restored buildings and the Knochenhauer Amtshaus has only wooden nails just as it was build originally. Amazing!
Best spot to sit down, have a coffee and enjoy the scenery. Truly Hildesheim's living room.
Fairy tale material. Extremely beautiful old town. Though it wasn't the original buildings, but it was very well rebuilt. Well done to the people of Hildesheim for such a wonderful experience.
