The 900-year-old tree is awesome, literally. It is a symbol of divinity since it was planted by Emperor Go-Shirakawa himself, and after the pest disasters and lack of rain in the recent years causing most of the leaves to fall, the branches - which were hardly seen in the prime days, are now revealed and they looked like an astonishing replica of the Buddha with a thousand arms. This was described in Japanese on the notice board by the entrance, and I thought it was quite true. Wow.

Kiyomori Taira laid the foundation of this shrine by an order of retired emperor Goshirakawa joko , who had a religious faith of Kumano in Wakayama prefecture . Since it was hard to worship at shrines in Kumano at that time , so this shrine was built instead of kumano in 1160.

It's a very refreshing place every time I go here and looked up on the tree ️

I stumbled on this shrine on my walk to Nishki market. A beautiful shrine with an incredibly old tree planted by a retired emperor. If you are after a stamp in your goschuin it has a unique crow motief which is one of my favourites so far. Dont forget to walk to the back as there are a series of artworks up the steps which have been painted on wood.
