Tucked behind a working fire station, The Essex Fire museum is a fantastic treasure trove of exhibits demonstrating the history of the Essex Fire Service. The museum houses a collection of historic fire engines, including one of the iconic Dennis F12 Pump Escape Fire Engine from 1953. The museum also houses a large collection of firefighting equipment, numerous firefighting uniforms and photographs, in fact, far too much to take-in in just one visit. There is a specific Second World War themed section with exhibits showing some of the fire fighting equipment used during the war with a collection of uniforms used buy the voluntary and national fire services. During the family fun days there are plenty of activities for the kids, with an opportunity to sit in a fire engine, squirt water, follow the museum trail or participate in some craft activities. Thoroughly recommend a visit, see the website for open dates.

Me, my niece and 3 kids(baby does count) ages 10,6 and 3 loved it. I was told it was an open day meant for adults and family day was next week but they still provided colouring table and number hunt. Yes it maybe small but i didn't know what to expect and they have displayed everything so well.. It is free(donations welcome) and well worth a visit. I spoke to a gentleman that was telling me history of some of the vehicles and knew his stuff. My kids want to go next week because they will get to use the hose.

It's a good day out for the family. Everytime I've come here it's because I'm helping out with the Fire Cadets. It's nice to see lots of people in the local community that are interested in the Fire Service like we are. On open days, you're able to use the hose, sit in the fire appliance, have a look around the museum and very rarely but occasionally the firefighters on duty will come out and give a demonstration whether that's a chip pan demonstration, they test the ALP or they'll clean the hoses that they use on call outs.
