The statue to the 1st Duque da Terceira (Duke of Terceira), one of the most significant military leaders of Portuguese Liberal Wars that lasted about 6 years (1828 to 1834), a conflict that pitted two royal brothers, Dom Miguel, the commander of the conservative rebel forces on one side, and Dom Pedro, the Emperor of Brazil and then the liberal King of Portugal, on the other, should be seen in conjunction with a broader tour of the surrounding area, i.e. the entire Praça (square) Duque da Terceira, with its beautiful Portuguese traditional mosaic pavement, \calçada portuguesa\, the interesting view, up north, of Rua do Alecrim (the first blue building is LX Boutique Hotel, which was portrayed by José Saramago, the Nobel Prize winner in literature, as Hotel Bragança, in his book The Year of the Death of Ricardo Reis, featuring one of heteronyms of the most important Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa), along with the fanning roundabout perspective of two surrounding streets, Rua Bernardino Costa on the right, and Rua dos Remolares on the left, then the adjoining square Cais do Sodré, formerly of ill repute, featuring an interesting 1928 Art Deco building, the train station serving the resort city of Cascais, on the right, and, finally, the riverfront of Tagus, with its lounge-chairs-styled benches, a view to the river, its opposite bank and the bridge Ponte 25 de Abril on the right. To sit down on either the embankment, with your feet hanging freely above the water or stretch leisurely on the public benches featuring separate feet support, could be a great idea of a respite from a busy city life or intense sightseeing activities.
