Great place for family day out (take bikes too if you can). Chateau is beautiful inside. Picnic or go to the lovely tea room in the grounds. The gardens are lovely. We also cycled around lots of the paths and completed some of the exercise stations dotted around. 4 or 5 different things to do and all a 5 min walk from Compiègne centre

This was an AMAZING Palace! Tons of Kings and Queens have walked these halls - Marie Antoinette was first recieved in France in this building. It was truly amazing! I wish I could have seen the whole building but this place is a 5 star place to visit in France!

One of the summer palaces for the French monarchs, it's an elegant display of royal indulgence. Wonderfully conserved chambers, definitely worth a visit. Free for youth under 26, which is a nice touch.

The Château de Compiègne was a royal residence built for Louis XV and restored by Napoleon. Compiègne was one of three seats of royal government, the others being Versailles and Fontainebleau. Visitors can find three museums here: the apartments; the Museum of the Second Empire; and Le Musée de la Voiture, founded in 1927, with a collection of carriages, bicycles, and automobiles.
