Equatorial Launch Australia (ELA) is rated 3 out of 5 in the category australia's first commercial spaceport www.ela.space. Read and write reviews about Equatorial Launch Australia (ELA). Equatorial Launch Australia ( ELA ) are designing and constructing Australia’s first commercial spaceport. The facility will be located on the Gulkula Peninsula, East Arnhem Land. Due to its unique location, the peninsula was previously used by the European Space Agency between 1964 to 1974 as a space tracking station. THE LOCATION Being close to the equator at 12.5 degrees south means that vehicles launched from East Arnhem Land can benefit from the earth’s rotational speed – this can allow significantly more payload to be added in comparison to launching from a higher latitude. Customers will include private companies, research institutions and Government organisations both from Australia and internationally. OUR PARTNERS In a remarkable partnership with the traditional owners of the Gulkula Peninsula, the Gumatj Corporation (GC) are equally enthusiastic about the venture as it represents diversification from mining. The Gumatj people(s) are keen to see an environmentally sustainable industry on their land which will bring opportunities for employment education and training for many generations. In an approach of genuine partnership, much of the infrastructure requirement will be undertaken by the GC, using labour and equipment previously used for mining operations. Rangers from the Gumatj and other local Yolngu groups will prove environmental monitoring on the site and take an active role in payload recovery. OUR TEAM The company was founded by a group of Australian and American aerospace professionals who have significant experience building and managing launch facilities across both continents. Our Founder, Scott Wallis, comes from the Australian Airforce Space Program. Our CEO, Carley Scott, won a Telstra Business Women’s Award. Our Chief of Space was trained at NASA. The team is delivering results. NASA’s Southern Hemisphere campaign will be a world first from the Arnhem Space Centre in 2020.
