Visited the railway museum on an unscheduled visit (not an organised tour) and walking into a work in progress. So my initial impression was a little tainted by not having anyone around to explain. Anyway not wanting to waste the trip we ambled around the site. At the entrance is under renovation an impressive water tower, then admin buildings followed by a time classic semi circular stream shed workshops dating back from 1903-1913 and inside that smell of engrained water, oil, stream and coal dust, such a sweet smell. The building is in apparently good order and used to house several stream and diesel locomotives and rail rolling stock, that are on good condition. Also the shed is used to maintain and overhaul the rolling stock. One of the major stream loco's was undergoing a major refit by a small team of volunteer engineers. A great sight to see such dedication to bringing back into life such a masterful engineering work of art. Wishing then well at with their quest. Also in and outside the shed where several passenger carriages from the 1930-60 equally well maintained and a reminder of earlier times rail travel with wooded seating, though to highly decorative luxurious seating and coachwork. So to conclude what started of a little disappointing ( and that was my fault) turned out to be a very enjoyable half day trip. We wish the volunteers every success in maintaining and operating their Stream Railway locomotives and rolling stock. That will give so much pleasure to all stream railway enthusiast's. Thank you again for your time, skill and efforts and sure my 3 start now will become 5 starts when we visit again around 2025.
